WWE Night of Champions 2014: 5 biggest takeaways

facebooktwitterreddit

In a night where three titles changed hands, Sunday’s WWE Night of Champions ended with a disqualification. One might argue that fans paying to watch the show should be upset that the main event did not end with a clean finish, while others wouldn’t mind seeing John Cena and Brock Lesnar go at each other again at the next month’s show on Oct. 26, which is appropriately titled Hell in a Cell.

Here are 5 takeaways from last night’s PPV:

1. Who will Seth Rollins feud with?

Seth Rollins was a busy man Sunday night. While his match with Roman Reigns was scratched because of Reigns’ emergency surgery the day before, we wondered what they would do with Rollins. The logical choice was to bring back Dean Ambrose.

After issuing an open challenge to the WWE locker room, Ambrose made his return via cab. What, he doesn’t believe in Uber? And did he pay his fare? We need answers, WWE.

Ambrose and Rollins brawled to the stage before Triple H and security broke it up. So we assumed Rollins vs. Ambrose will continue in the coming weeks. Right? Here comes the swerve.

Mr. Money in the Bank then comes out during Cena-Lesnar and attacks the WWE’s favorite son with the briefcase, causing a DQ.

Wait, who will Rollins feud with? Does he feud with Cena since he cost him the title? Or is it Ambrose, who made his big return earlier in the night? My money is on Ambrose. Which leads me to…

2. Brock Lesnar vs. John Cena…again

I know most of you do not want to see Lesnar take on Cena again. But the show next month is called Hell in a Cell. The only selling point to another chapter in this feud is locking these two in a cell. I love it.

The finish to Sunday’s match wasn’t the best option, but it was the most logical one.

Lesnar still looks like a beast after taking three Attitude Adjustments and a Curb Stomp, but still ending the show standing. Cena got more offense in and was one second away from becoming champion. More importantly, the finish leaves you intrigued to tune into Raw to see what happens.

If Lesnar would have pinned Cena clean, you would have to move on from the rivalry. Who else is there for Lesnar to feud with? My point exactly.

3. Cesaro-Sheamus quietly had one of the best matches of the year

While Cena and Lesnar headlined the show, Cesaro and Sheamus had one of the best matches in recent memory on WWE programming. The two incorporated new moves and it seemed like they executed every maneuver with precision.

The intensity of the match did not stop and the fans were treated with near falls and two stars delivering a great story without much a buildup in weeks leading up to the match.

Sheamus and Cesaro are really good. While a match of this quality is great for the WWE United States Championship, both deserve to be higher up on the card.

4. WWE pushed a country band more than The Miz and Dolph Ziggler

I get it. You’re in Nashville, TN. It’s good cross promotion. But why do it during a match that pits two great workers in The Miz and Dolph Ziggler for the Intercontinental title?

The WWE has more worried about making sure Florida-Georgia Line, a well-known country band, got over than what was going on in the ring. In case you have short-term memory loss, the band and commentators made sure to remind us when their next record was coming out.

Miz and Ziggler had one of the more legit storylines going into Night of Champions. And while you will remember The Miz regaining the I-C title, the highlight from the WWE will be Florida-Georgia Line giving Damien Mizdow a weak shove.

The match was average, but deserved more spots. That’s what happens when the camera is fixed on a country band at ringside instead of in the ring.

5. RKOs delivered in mid-air will never get old

Randy Orton and Chris Jericho are future Hall of Famers. The two have had some great matches in their history against the likes of Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Triple H, The Undertaker and many more.

We knew going into this match that Jericho will be taking some time off. So a Orton victory was likely. The match had some great spots and the RKO in mid-air delivered to Jericho coming off the top rope was perfect. While we have seen that spot before, it never gets old.

All this match needed was a real story behind it. But I wonder what is next for Randy Orton.

Overall, the show was above average. Some great matches that did not come with much buildup. Loved how Stardust and Goldust have the tag team titles. Will we see The Ascension be their first title defense? Rusev needs to move on and get a big push towards the top of the card. But who will be his opponent? A.J. Lee winning the Divas title is not a surprise since I expect a program with Stephanie McMahon.
