With the NFL embroiled in controversy over its handling of domestic abuse cases against some of its employees, it would behoove one of its model franchises to maybe discuss that very issue before it signs a familiar face with a checkered past. So it makes sense that Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin had a sit-down with the newly signed James Harrison about the changing attitudes in NFL towards off-the-field violence.

“I’ve discussed directly that climate change [in the NFL] with James,” Tomlin said Tuesday at his weekly news conference, per ESPN. “But knowing James, he’s grown a lot, and I don’t anticipate that being an issue at all moving forward.”

So, how exactly did that conversation go? Did Mike Tomlin just say, “So James, you’re totally over that hitting-your-girlfriend thing, right? Yes? Good, good. That’s real good. Whew. Ha. OK, sign here, here and here. Initial there.”

It seems like a weird conversation to have to have, but there it is. As for the other concern with Harrison — that being his effectiveness at this age — Tomlin had an answer as well.

“We know James. James knows us. James understands the schemes,” Tomlin said. “We’re going to do what he’s capable of handling from a mental standpoint and a physical standpoint.”
