Report: Real Madrid set sights on Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling

Raheem Sterling has been one of the hottest teenage players for both club and country across the globe for the better part of the last year. Naturally that makes people and other clubs take notice, but for Sterling he appears to have one of the biggest names in world soccer after him—Real Madrid.

The Daily Mirror in the UK is reporting that the Spanish giants, who just got done dropping over $150 million this summer, have picked up their interest in the Liverpool winger and could be interested in a move as soon as January if not by next summer.

Real Madrid are buoyed by the fact that they sold Angel Di Maria for nearly $100 million at the transfer deadline and have that cash to spend.

However, this could all be leverage by Sterling, who is sitting on a “paltry” £30,000-pounds-a-week wage at Liverpool.

That figure is one of the lowest, if not the lowest on the Liverpool squad and is certainly the lowest among the regular names for the England national team.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rogers has been reluctant to splash the cash for the 19-year-old winger given his age and the age-old tale of players not being equipped to handle big money at a young age.

“When you reward young players too quickly – Raheem’s still only 19 – you give them too much too early and that will be their downfall. It’s a big problem because they lose their hunger.”

Since joining Liverpool in 2012, Sterling has played in 65 games—scoring 14 times in the process. He’s also become a mainstay for Roy Hodgson’s England squad.

If Sterling does want to make the move, he’ll have support from former EPL star Gareth Bale, who’s been a massive success since moving to the club from Tottenham Hotspur.
