The Minnesota Timberwolves have hired shooting coach Mike Penberthy, according to multiple sources. Penberthy, a former player known for his shooting touch above all else, played two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers in the early 2000’s and was a part of their 2001 championship team.

According to ESPN, Penberthy  worked with Spanish star Ricky Rubio for a week this summer, helping to hone the career 37% shooter’s jump shot. He must have made quite an impression, because now he’s got the gig full time.

It’s hard to believe, but Rubio  actually improved his field goal percentage from 36% in 2012-1013 to 38% in the 2013-14 season. If Penberthy can get Rubio up to the all important 40% barrier and similarly help him improve his three point percentages to around the same number, then Rubio’s shooting issues will be largely be forgotten and Penberthy will have proven himself a worthy investment.

Rubio’s agent Dan Fegan would certainly appreciate Penberthy’s shooting help, as a significant increase in shooting percentage out of Rubio would certainly help his case at the negotiating table.

Penberthy is also expected to help Wolves’ rookies Zach LaVine and Andrew Wiggins as they embark on a grinding 82 game schedule, where consistency in their jumpshots will largely determine their effectiveness and their ability to stay out on the floor.

It’s only a small move for the Wolves, but the Penberthy hire could pay big dividends for them down the road.
