When the news broke that the Oakland Raiders had fired head coach Dennis Allen, the rumor mill immediately started buzzing that Jon Gruden could be a possible replacement.

More from Las Vegas Raiders

It wasn’t surprising. Gruden has been thrown in about every coaching rumor since he became a broadcasting star at ESPN. Plus, Gruden coached the Raiders from 1998-2001, making him an even better candidate.

The Raiders admitted the obvious on Tuesday: they will consider reaching out to Gruden for the open gig.

While Gruden leaving his cushy job at ESPN to coach one of the worst teams in football seems a bit far-fetched, it appears he might have interest if he believes Derek Carr is the next great NFL quarterback.

Gruden has a career record of 95-81 in 11 seasons and won a Super Bowl with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002.

Tony Sparano is the Raiders’ current interim coach.
