Although the Dallas Cowboys want to reduce the workload of running back DeMarco Murray, that doesn’t mean they’re not interested in keeping the veteran in Big D next year.

In fact, it’s the complete opposite as the two have continually been in negotiations about a new contract however the sides still remain far apart. It’s possible a new deal could be agreed upon in the future though the Dallas Morning News suggests that the Cowboys may be best served by issuing the franchise tag on DeMarco Murray.

"They’ve been in talks about a long-term contract extension during the season for Murray, who has helped himself with his fast start. But using the franchise tag on Murray over Bryant seems like a smart choice for the Cowboys. Murray is on pace to reach 400 carries this season and he’s had a history of injuries."

The belief here is that Murray has shown to be somewhat of an injury risk before and the fact that he’s on pace for 400 carries currently only elevates such a risk. The Dallas Cowboys could also be looking at historical performances of players who’ve put up 400 carries in a season as they tend to struggle the following year.

Given that, the one-year franchise tag would allow the Dallas Cowboys to evaluate how DeMarco Murray would play next season before committing to him long-term (or possible moving on). It would cost the Dallas Cowboys a little more financially to make such a move though they wouldn’t be stuck with a multi-year deal either which may be worth the extra coin.

A franchise tag on a running back last season was just under $10 million dollars.
