Hope Solo was arrested for domestic abuse earlier this summer, and the cries for her to be punished by the USWNT are growing louder and closer to home.

Hope Solo is one of the most recognizable names in American soccer, but she’s also in the middle of the current domestic violence discussion and she’s on the wrong side of the aisle. Just like Ray Rice, Greg Hardy and so many others, Solo was arrested and charged with domestic violence, and it’s something that has raised major concern with a former teammate.

Former USWNT backup goalie Jillian Loyden penned a lengthy piece for USA Today in which she condemned Solo’s actions and called for her to be benched by the USWNT and replaced as goalie.

This isn’t an attempt to get playing time either, as while Loyden backed up Solo in the net, she formally retired on Monday to pursue a career in fighting domestic violence in America. The now-former goalie has a very personal connection to the battle she is fighting, which helps explain why she is leving the sport she loves and condemning even her own former teammates.

It’s clear that Loyden isn’t in this for personal gain as she’s truly crusading for a cause she believes in. it’s something that is painfully relevant in the public eye, and it’s a sad commentary on us as a human species that it takes sports to make us realize that domestic violence is an issue.

Loyden is brave for taking the path that she is taking, but she isn’t alone in her journey. This is the kind of awareness that is needed to bring about an end to domestic violence as Loyden is showing that a career in sports is far less important than ending one of the worst epidemics in American history.
