Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray is having a remarkable season, leading the league in rushing with 670 yards rushing through five games. It has opened up the discussion early on about whether or not Murray could break the single season rushing record.

Of course Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones wants to lighten the work load for the oft-injured Murray, but former wide receiver Michael Irvin disagrees with his former boss. Irvin says he thinks it is a contractually motivated move to prevent Murray from driving up the price in a new contract rather than about winning and succeeding in the playoffs.

“I kind of got on Jerry for making that comment about lightening his load, because at this time it looks like you’re making the comment for contract and not for championships,” Irvin said on KRLD-FM on Monday, via the Dallas Morning News. “That’s what Marshall and all those guys will throw back at me in those meeting rooms. I’m like, ‘Don’t do that Jerry.’ Why you don’t do that right now is that it’s not just about DeMarco right now, it’s about that offensive line and they want to do something special. … They have it going right now as far being the leading rusher and the possibility of breaking that record of Eric Dickerson. You don’t stop that. You don’t stop it for nothing in the world.”

Of course given Murray’s glaring injury record, the logical move would be to lighten his load to keep him healthy. And while Irvin might disagree with Jones, head coach Jason Garrett agrees with him and lowering Murray’s carries.
