A loss sends the Giants back to Washington in a winner-take-all Game 5 while a victory sends San Francisco to the National League Championship series for the third time in five years. Needless to say, it’s a huge game for Ryan Vogeslong and it may be his last for the franchise, at least in a starting capacity.
Vogelsong, who was originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants was a highly touted prospect though never fulfilled the lofty expectations. That lead to a trade to the Pittsburgh Pirates where Ryan Vogelsong remained for a few seasons before his struggles eventually landed him in Japan.
The pitcher spent multiple seasons in Japan and failed in a bid to return to Major League Baseball until the San Francisco Giants, in desperate need of a pitcher, decided to give the veteran a call. Not only did Ryan Vogelsong answer such for the San Francisco Giants but he became one of their best starters.
Now 37, it’s been a sub-par season for the free agent to be and he could be taking the mound for the final time in orange and black which is something Vogelsong seems aware of.
“Well, that’s not going to come into my mind tomorrow,” Vogelsong said after Monday’s game. “I had those feelings toward the end of the regular season. Didn’t really finish the way I wanted to.”
Even if the San Francisco Giants advance, it’s likely their four-man rotation will consist of Yusimero Petit, leaving Vogelsong as the odd-man out. Hopefully for those in San Francisco, Ryan Vogelsong’s possible last start as a member of the Giants completes the odd storybook ending.
