Plastc, the card that will replace your wallet

Plastic wants to be the card that replaces your wallet

More from Technology

A wallet is usually filled with plastic cards of all different types. We carry debit cards, credit cards and membership cards that all have monetary values attached to them. Now, developers are working to push all of those separate cards into one single offering.

Enter Plastc

.

Plastc will use an E-inc display and can hold up to 20 different cards. With the card itself being a technological device, it will be able to undergo firmware updates and be advanced upon following launch as well.

From the get go, Plastc will launch with NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, the same technology that the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus are utilizing with Apple Pay. The goal however is to expand on EMV capabilities to shift to a more secure chip model in the cards, rather than magnetic strips. The idea would be that Plastc could even replace a workplace keycard.

For security, Plastc has a PIN of its own, and also must be synced to a smartphone. If you were to lose the card, a hard wipe would be done, and a “Return Me” feature enables when the card is separated too far from the synced smartphone.

Regarding the viability and use of Plastc, Ryan Marquis, Plastc COO, told The Verge, ““Ultimately a cloud-based digital wallet will be the winner. I will utilize Apple Pay because it’s simple and easy, but there are so many use cases in our world where I’m still going to need a physical card. There are so many things that point-of-sale machines just aren’t ready for yet”

Right now, Plastc can be preordered for $155 and will ship sometime in the summer of 2015.

I was hesitant at first, but I love the way Plastc sounds and I am all in on Apple Pay. While I probably won’t preorder, I will be making full use of both of these options.
