NBA commissioner Adam Silver has previously stated that the idea of advertisements on jerseys was something the league was thinking about, but it seems as if they’re already implementing the idea.

According to Sports Business Journal, the NBA’s new television deal which will pay the league nearly $25 billion dollars over the next nine years includes the right to sell ads on available jersey space.
"Sources familiar with the TV deals admit both networks pushed hard to be allowed to sell ads on team jerseys outright, but the league balked at handing over the potentially lucrative rights. Under the new TV deals, NBA teams maintain the rights to sell the jersey advertising, which has an estimated value ranging from around $800,000 for small-market teams like the Memphis Grizzlies to more than $10 million for large-market teams like the Los Angeles Lakers."
The idea of NBA teams selling ad space on their uniform isn’t new as they’re already allowed to do so in regards to their practice jersey. However this would be the first time we’d see true advertisements/company logos outside of the NBA (or uniform makers) appearing on game jerseys.
Such has been frowned upon by many though we’ve seen many other leagues implement the practice though the four major American Sports, NFL, MLB, NHL and of course the NBA have refrained from doing so for the time being.
Generally it seems the biggest fear is that jerseys will end up looking like walking billboards (which can be seen in the WNBA) though it seems likely the NBA would regulate where the advertisements could be placed and their size.
Still it seems inevitable that the NBA will eventually allow advertisements on their jerseys and it’s likely the NFL, MLB and NHL aren’t all that far behind.
