College football thoughts and musings from late games October 11

Did you miss any of the night games from Saturday? No, there were no Pac-12 late night shootouts, but that doesn’t mean that nothing of interest happened.

Afternoon games

It may not have been pretty, but at least Michigan fans finally had something to cheer about at home. The Michigan defense paralyzed the Penn State offense in the second half. Regardless of how you feel about Michigan football or Devin Gardner, you have to tip your hat to his toughness. The guy couldn’t move at all by the time the fourth quarter rolled around, and he still stayed in there and led his team to a much-needed victory.

I was a fan of John O’Korn last year, and was very surprised when Houston decided to go with Greg Ward over him. I guess they knew what was best for them. Ward led Houston in a big come-from-behind victory to beat Memphis.

LSU and Florida really was a defensive battle despite the 30-27 final score. The LSU defense was more effective though because they picked off Jeff Driskel twice and forced him to fumble the ball as well. He ran the ball semi-effectively, but his passing was still an issue. One of those interceptions set up the game winning LSU field goal. The Florida defense did a great job shutting down the LSU passing game, but they had issues stopping Leonard Fournette. With him and Jalen Hurd of Tennessee, the SEC is going to have good backs for the next few years as well. This win by LSU prevented their first 0-3 conference start since 1999.

Wow, what a year for the state of Mississippi! The road to the SEC West crown and a playoff berth goes through either Starkville or Oxford. That much is clear. As to which one, your guess is as good as mine.

Bo Wallace looks like a completely different person this year, which has made him a completely different player. There is no way he would have been able to lead his team to a win in College Station last year. On top of that, the Mississippi defense is for real, folks. They made Kenny Hill make some really bad mistakes. Jumping out to a 21-0 lead at halftime completely took the Texas A&M fans out of the game. Unfortunately for the cadets, there wasn’t much smooching going on at Kyle Field on Saturday night.

The cardiac kids at Arizona just couldn’t quite pull this one out against USC. The Wildcat defense just allowed too many big plays at inopportune times. That said, Arizona QB Anu Solomon put his team into position for a 36 yard field goal attempt as time was running out. Arizona is wide-right from being 6-0 for the first time since 1993. USC’s defense did a great job of stopping the run, but they did give up nearly 400 yards passing.

Nevada got a pretty bad offensive pass interference penalty that took a touchdown off the board with 2:30 left that thwarted their comeback attempt on Colorado State. Now, I’m not going to rag on the officials – in real time, I can see how they could see it as pass interference, especially from the angle the official had – but it could have cost the Wolfpack the game. Then again, the way that Colorado State QB Garrett Grayson was playing, it might not have mattered that the Wolfpack tied the game…..
