Hoping your favorite NBA team will make a major move at the annual February trade deadline? You may be out of luck as it appears front offices across the league are unsure if they want to make any big moves leading up to the NBA’s new television deal.
That’s the word from Grantland’s Zach Lowe who believes no general manager wants to be left with egg on his face in two seasons when the salary cap is set to expand which could create a very soft NBA trade deadline.
"Still: The league is like the wild, wild west right now. No one is quite sure what path the cap will take, and uncertainty can breed caution; no one wants to make a move that looks silly two years later.Only one surefire first-round pick changed hands around the last two trade deadlines combined, and though picks have moved more freely at other times, pick-hoarding in February may dampen the deadline again."
It’s an understandable sentiment as the last thing you want to have happen is to miss out on a key free agent because you filled up too much of your available space. This may not apply to some of the smaller market teams who know they have little to zero shot in bringing in a key free agent though for some of the major market teams, it’s likely something to be in the back of their mind.
We’ve already seen a similar situation take place before the last Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) was agreed upon and front offices were worried about taking on additional salary. It seems like we could be dealing with a nearly identical situation this time around which isn’t going to make many fans very happy come the NBA trade deadline.
