NBA Commissioner Adam Silver Wants To Expand Into Europe

It’s bad enough when a team has to go on a two-week road trip across the country. But can you imagine doing so across the Atlantic ocean? Crazy as the thought is, it’s something NBA commissioner Adam Silver wants to do in effort to expand the league globally.

The NBA has been attempting to increase their influence around the world for quite some time as they’ve been holding international matches in the preseason for years.

Now with deeper pockets than ever, it seems as if expansion to Europe is the next best move according to Silver.

“When we do expand, we’d need to expand probably with multiple teams, so that you wouldn’t have an orphan team in Europe, but that you’d potentially have a division so those teams could play each other more often and NBA teams presumably traveling in Europe could have more teams to play when they’re over there,” said Silver.

“It’s still a concept, but I’m comfortable with it.”

While having multiple teams in Europe would likely be a wonderful idea on the surface, the biggest roadblock would likely be logistics. It would be difficult enough for the Boston Celtics or New York Knicks to play across the Atlantic in a vastly different time zone, but can you imagine the Los Angeles Lakers or Golden State Warriors having to make such a trip? It’s hard to think such would be fair as not only would the time different play a major factor but the travel would be absolutely painful.

Perhaps the NBA creating their own league in Europe would be something more realistic at first though fans likely wouldn’t flock to the games without NBA star talent participating which creates a problem.

For now it doesn’t appear as if a team or teams in Europe is imminent though it’s obviously being heavily discussed.
