Fitbit Surge To Be Like A Smartwatch

The leader in the fitness tracker technology category, Fitbit, is apparently set to release another new device that has smartwatch capabilities.

Fitbit, the company who’s name runs synonymous with fitness trackers in the technology industry, is set to unveil a handful of new devices. Leaked last week, Fitbit looks set to unveil the Fitbit Charge in two different options, but a third device looks to be on the horizon as well.

The Fitbit Charge and Fitbit Charge HR are set to become the next in the fitness tracker product line, however, the Fitbit Surge is looking to be a little bit more than just a fitness tracker. As well as providing your standard tracking feedback, the Surge also aims to be part smartwatch.

According to The Verge, the Fitbit Surge is designed to be targeted towards serious athletes. Making it similar to a smartwatch, the Surge will show off text and call notifcations, syncing it with a smartphone.

The Verge goes on to state that the new Fitbit Surge is likely going to retail for $249. The price seems a bit much for a typical fitness tracker that would be designed to track steps and calories, but the Surge is designed to be much more than that.

At this point, Fitbit may be losing a retailers however as Apple is reportedly considering pulling the products from their stores. While this may seem like somewhat of a silly move, there is some history here. Apple has rolled out its new HealthKit app to help developers integrate into the new iOS 8. Unfortunately, Fitbit doesn’t want to play nice.

Fitbit has decided they won’t, and don’t have any plans to, integrate their products with HealthKit. On top of that, Apple has the Apple Watch coming out, and may want less competition in their own marketplace.

At any rate, make sure to look into the Fitbit Surge if you are looking for a hybrid fitness tracker of sorts, and let us know what you think.
