On Saturday, Senzo Meyiwa was between the pipes as he and his Orlando Pirates teammates advanced to the semifinals of the South African League Cup. Less than 24 hours later, the South African national team captain was shot dead.

Meyiwa was murdered at his girlfriend’s house in the city of Vosloorus, which is located outside of Johannesburg. According to the police, Meyiwa was involved in an “altercation” between three men, who came inside of the house. The three suspects fled on foot after shooting Meyiwa, who was dead on arrival at the hospital.

The 27-year-old netminder had been playing some of his best soccer recently, as he not allowed a goal in four Africa Cup of Nations matches.

Meyiwa’s international teammate, Doncaster Rovers midfielder Dean Furman, tweeted: “Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time.”

Meyiwa spent all 10 of his seasons with the Pirates, where he had made 73 appearances for the club. He was named team captain of South Africa for the 2014 World Cup, where he made six appearances for the club. Meyiwa was one of the most popular soccer players in the nation.

The South African Police Service said “we will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers” to justice.
