For the past decade the Seattle Mariners have struggled as they’ve played the role of a small market team. However with an influx of money over the past few seasons, the Seattle Mariners have not only been picking up All-Star talent in the free agent pool but they’re also re-signing their own.

Case in point the new $100 million dollar contract extension expected to be signed by third baseman Kyle Seager after he passes a physical.

That’s the word from Yahoo’s Jeff Passan who notes the seven-year deal also includes a club option for an eighth season which would pay Kyle Seager an additional $20 million dollars.

Not only has Kyle Seager, 27, become one of the better offensive third baseman in baseball he’s also extremely sure handed on defense who won his first Gold Glove this year. In addition he’s also been able to provide a well-rounded game outside of the box score as he found himself among the WAR (wins above replacement) leaders.

There is no denying that investing in Kyle Seager is a risk considering $100 million dollars can buy you a lot of talent in the open market, though considering the going rate for players like Pablo Sandoval who are wanting $100 million for five years, in a way it’s a bit of a steal hard as that might be to believe.

It should be interesting to see how Seager plays now as he no longer needs to worry about a pending free agency or a new contract. Does he continue to play well and perhaps even grow as a player? Or does he relax knowing he’s now financially secure? We’ve seen players go both ways, so hopefully for the Seattle Mariners their talented third baseman will continue to trend upwards.
