The Edmonton Oilers have called a press conference for Friday, December 5th

The Edmonton Oilers were one of the few NHL teams that managed not to embarrass themselves on Thursday night.

Of course, they didn’t play — so that probably had more to do with it than anything.

The Oilers have managed to take a slow start to the 2014-2015 season and send it spiraling downward faster than any other team in the league; even the injury-depleted Columbus Blue Jackets and the roster-depleted Buffalo Sabres have been having a better year. The Edmonton franchise sits firmly entrenched in the last place spot in the league, and that doesn’t look to be changing soon.

This would be one thing if the team was in the middle of a rebuild, like Buffalo, or at the tail end of a multi-season cup run, like both Philadelphia and San Jose. The Oilers have missed the post-season for the past eight consecutive seasons, though — and with this season shaping up to be no different, something needs to change soon. Which is obviously why the team has announced a press conference for Friday morning — right?

"According to the press release, MacTavish will address the Oilers performance through 26 games and take questions from the media."

NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk reports that, in addition to the facts stated in the above press release outline, the organization is undergoing a ‘full forensic investigation’, which is a diplomatic way of suggesting that someone is getting very incredibly fired and someone else is almost certainly getting traded. Looks like the firing could be actual front office brass:

Or, being Edmonton, they’re going to replace all the skate sharpeners in Rexall and add seat cushions to the player home bench to make sure everyone is ready to go for all sixty minutes.

Whatever the change may be, though, most are under the assumption that it’s going to have to be big — this franchise has gone beyond disappointing fans. They’re actually a miniscule step removed from outright self-sabotage… and mutiny looks like a good bet if the conference is nothing more than a feel-good pep talk.
