The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to talk Cole Hamels trades with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants.

More from Boston Red Sox

With Jon Lester now off the market, the loser of that sweepstakes are scrambling to find starting pitching help.

There are still a few large names available in free agency though it might be Philadelphia Phillies ace Cole Hamels who is the biggest target as the Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox and San Francisco Giants are all interested in a trade for the southpaw.

That’s the word from ESPN’s Jayson Stark who hints all three teams will likely make an attempt at a deal.

While the Giants and Phillies have a recent history (San Francisco acquired Hunter Pence from Philadelphia in 2012) it’s questionable if their minor league system has enough depth to obtain Hamels, so they appear the least likely to swing such a trade.

The Los Angeles Dodgers and Boston Red Sox meanwhile have stocked farm systems ripe with young talent that will be MLB-ready soon, so one could reasonably assume they’d be the favorites if the Philadelphia Phillies were to finally trade Cole Hamels.

Of course the asking price has been over the moon in recent months and it’s not known if Boston or Los Angeles will be willing to meet Philadelphia’s demands. Still, adding Cole Hamels to either of their rotations would be a major coup and one that likely has fans of both franchises salivating at the thought.

In addition to prospects, it’s been said the Phillies expect the obtaining team to also cover most (if not all) of Hamels’ remaining salary which will limit his potential suitors.
