LeBron James obtaining the “I can’t breathe” shirt in support of Eric Garner required an elaborate scheme which involved help from Brooklyn Nets security and Jay Z to sneak the shirt into the arena.

After Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls (and other NFL players) wore an “I can’t breathe” shirt in honor of Eric Garner this past weekend, LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers wanted to do so as well.

Only problem? Getting the t-shirts delivered to him in such a short window of time.

That’s where good friend and rapper Jay Z along with a Brooklyn Nets security guard helped make the situation a reality.

James and his Cavs were of course playing against the Nets at the Barclays Center and that’s where point guard Deron Williams was able to get the contact phone number of a security guard who helped assist in getting the t-shirts into the area, something the NBA did not want.

"The plan was simple, really: Deliver replicas of the “I Can’t Breathe” T-shirt to James and other players who might be interested in wearing them before the game. Executing that plan, though, would be far more complex, as intermediaries between Jay-Z and James would need to get involved, none of the T-shirts actually existed yet, and the game was less than 24 hours away. But those who were aware of the plan were confident."

The whole process was shockingly elaborate but in short, Russell Simmons, founder of Def Jam Records helped get a few people in touch which resulted in Williams, Jay Z and James all working together in collaboration with the security guard who was able to get the “I can’t breathe” shirts into the Barclays Center undetected.

Once delivered the the Nets locker room, Deron Williams handed them out to his teammates and also brought a collection over to the Cleveland Cavaliers and LeBron James.

The over-the-top process is well worth a read and perhaps Deron Williams has a second career as an international spy once his playing days are over.
