The Cleveland Browns and the rest of the NFL will finally get a chance to see what the former Heisman winner and first round pick will be able to do on the football field on Sunday as he makes his first career start.
If practice is any indication of what he’ll do when the Browns take on the Cincinnati Bengals at home on Sunday afternoon then he should be a nightmare for the defense. That’s the opinion of Browns hard-hitting safety Donte Whitner anyways who said Manziel has been a nightmare to defend in practice.
“You see him being Johnny Football,” Whitner added. “You don’t see him trying to duplicate anybody’s quarterbacking style, just sitting in the pocket. If something’s not right, you see him using his instincts and his intangibles, breaking the pocket. That’s where I can see growth.”
Manziel is starting over Brian Hoyer who has cooled off dramatically since the first month-plus and has only led one touchdown drive in his last 29 drives opening the door for the first round pick to take his job and never give it back to the free agent to be.
Helping Manziel’s cause is the return to health of tight end Jordan Cameron and wide receiver Josh Gordon who thinks Manziel has the skills and the mindset to keep the team in the playoff chase.
“I think he’s got enough, he’s got what we need right now to move forward and pull off these last three wins,” Gordon said, via NFL Network’s Albert Breer. “He’s willing to do anything, extend a play, and make something out of nothing. That mindset isn’t in everybody. A lot of guys will quit, take a sack or throw the ball away. That’s not what he does.”
If Manziel can indeed be a nightmare for opposing defenses just like he was in college, the Browns may have finally solved their quarterback issues that date back to the end of the Bernie Kosar era.
