In their search for their next NFL head coach, the Atlanta Falcons have requested permission to speak to Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Adam Gase.

The Atlanta Falcons wasted no time before beginning the search for their next head coach. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport, they have already requested permission to interview Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase to fill their head coaching vacancy.

The Falcon’s are working to find a replacement for Mike Smith as head coach. Smith’s teams has a 66-46 record in seven seasons in Atlanta. They also made the playoffs in four of those seven seasons, but managed to win just one playoff game during that time.

The 36-year old Gase has been Denver’s offensive coordinator for two seasons. He was the team’s quarterback’s coach in 2011, and was promoted when Mike McCoy was hired away to become the head coach of the San Diego Chargers.

Despite his young age, Gase is considered one of the top coordinators in the NFL. He was the quarterback coach who helped engineer the Tim Tebow playoff run 2011. The the re-tailored the entire offense to suit Peyton Manning’s talents the following season.

With Gase in charge, the Bronco’s offense ranked first in yards, points, and passing yards in 2013. This season, they were fourth in yard and passings yards, and second in points, as the Broncos shifted to more of a running focus down the stretch this season.

The Falcons are coming off back-to-back losing seasons. They had a chance to win the awful NFC South on Sunday with a win over Carolina at home, but instead were blown out 34-3.
