Super Bowl 49: Top 15 quarterback performances all-time
By Brad Rowland
1) Joe Montana, San Francisco 49ers, Super Bowl XXIV
You knew it was Montana.
The San Francisco 49ers still hold two Super Bowl records based on their performance in Super Bowl XXIV, as they blasted the Denver Broncos with a record 55 points for a 45-point blowout that still stands as the largest margin in history. As a singular entity, no one has ever performed better in this game than Montana did on January 28, 1990, and the numbers tell the story.
Montana completed 22 of 29 passes (73.3%) for 297 yards, but the dagger is the fact that he threw five touchdown passes and no interceptions. Obviously, there have been more prolific showings from a yardage standpoint, but he nearly cracked 300 yards in a 45-point (!) game, and the 49ers could have dialed up virtually any score on this night.
In case there was any debate, Joe Montana is the best quarterback in Super Bowl history, and three spots on this list back that up. Super Bowl XXIV was his masterpiece, and it is the gold standard by which all quarterbacks are measured on the biggest stage.
