Dan Quinn will be the new man in Atlanta very shortly

More from Atlanta Falcons

Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, fresh off coaching his defense in a Super Bowl loss to the Patriots, is expected to be named the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news today, tweeting that the Falcons and Quinn have agreed to a five-year deal, which is expected to be finalized today.

The anouncement does not come as a shock, as hiring someone coaching in the Super Bowl is the only logical reason the Falcons would have waited this long to hire a coach. (They’re not the Browns, after all). The move has been rumored for weeks, but the team was not allowed to officially hire Quinn until the Seahawks’ season had concluded.

Quinn’s hiring as a head coach should come as no surprise, as the Seahawks’ defense has been historically great the past two years, ranking 1st in total defense this year, first in 2013, and fourth in 2012. Quinn was a hot coaching candidate this January, as reports had him being considered for openings in Buffalo and San Francisco, and he was briefly the favorite to land the Jets’ job before they hired Todd Bowles.

The Falcons fired coach Mike Smith, their coach since 2008, after going 10-22 over the past two seasons, despite a talented team highlighted by Matt Ryan and Julio Jones, and playing in a historically awful division this season.
