Individually, 2014 was a great year for Lionel Messi. The 27-year-old was in the 2014 FIFA World Cup dream team while he also won the Golden Ball. He was once again in the FIFPro World XI and became Barcelona’s all time top scorer.

However, La Blaugrana ended up winning nothing in 2014 and despite Messi finally performing to the expectations expected of him in the World Cup, he could only help Argentina to second place in Brazil.

Along with this, controversy followed Messi as there were rumors of a fall out with new Barcelona manager, Luis Enrique while the Argentine was also a subject of a tax investigation fraud.

Messi recently spoke about these problems and how it was a challenge to get back to his best in the 2014-2015 season.

“The truth is that this year I tried to get to my best form as quickly as possible,” Messi said. “I knew I was coming off the back of a not very good year, during which I went through a lot of problems on and off the field.

“It was a challenge to change the image that I had given out last season and to be the player I had been in previous seasons again. That was my objective and that’s how I came out at the start of this season, really up for it.”

After a great start to the season, Barcelona suffered somewhat of a blip but are now in top form, winning 11 games in a row – their best run since the 2008/2009 season under Pep Guardiola.

Messi is certainly getting back to his best as well with 26 goals and 13 assists in just 23 La Liga games, recently surpassing Luis Figo for the most assists for the most assists in La Liga history.
