Adrian Peterson’s dad called the Thursday ruling, that the NFL can’t retroactively punish his son, a victory for all players.

Judge David Doty ruled on Thursday that the league could not proceed with retroactive discipline for Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson according to the terms of the new personal conduct policy. The NFL Players Association called the verdict “fair, under the rule of law.” NFLPA executive director DeMaurice Smith said it was a good example of why neutral arbitration is good for everyone involved.

Peterson’s dad was quick to add his approval as well.

"“I’m happy and blessed that the judge saw this in Adrian’s favor and I see this ruling as not only a victory for Adrian but it’s a victory for all the players in the NFL,” the elder Peterson said. (via Pro Football Talk)"

Peterson himself hasn’t issued any statement about the ruling, but he’s probably pretty happy to move onto the next phase of his career, which could very likely mean finding a new team. Although, he can’t proceed with that right away, as the league can also appeal this ruling. The statement they released was brief, saying only that they would review the decision.

The Vikings have a contract on Peterson through 2017, although there’s plenty of rumors that all is not well in that relationship either considering the reports that Peterson’s agent blew up at a Vikings executive. Shortly after, Peterson’s father went on the record to say that Peterson himself hasn’t demanded a trade and is open to returning to Minnesota. However, he also added that there is some animosity stemming from the fact that he believes the Vikings COO Kevin Warren was working with the league to keep Peterson off the field in 2015.

Warren’s recent promotion probably appears to Peterson’s camp as an endorsement of his actions and maybe even hints that they don’t want Peterson to return, despite public statements to the contrary. The Vikings have also said they will accommodate Peterson if he is dead set against returning.

For now, rumors of interest are floating around from teams such as the Cowboys, Colts and Cardinals, but it will all have to wait until the NFL decides what to do about the ruling handed down on Thursday.
