The No. 5 West Virginia Mountaineers weren’t supposed to be in the Round of 32. That is, according to the plethora of NCAA brackets that had Bob Huggins’ team losing to No. 12 Buffalo in the second round and being one of the teams who would be upset and not making it to the back half of the weekend.

Juwan Staten’s return to the lineup after missing the previous four games was the difference as he poured in 15 points and seven assists to lead the team to the 68-62 win over the upset-minded Bulls led by head coach Bobby Hurley in their first tournament appearance.

They’ll see a step up in competition in the form of No. 4 Maryland who survived an upset bid of their own against No. 13 Valparaiso on Friday night but managed to get a steal in the closing seconds as Valpo failed to get off a shot and won 65-62.

The winner of tonight’s game will have the challenge in front of them with the No. 1 overall seed, the Kentucky Wildcats waiting for them after they beat Cincinnati to get to the Sweet 16 and remain undefeated in their quest for history.
