Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has been charged with violent conduct for stomping on Manchester United keeper David De Gea during Sunday’s 2-1 loss to United.

It was just an all around bad day for Liverpool at Anfield.

In a crucial league match against rivals Manchester United at Anfield Stadium, Liverpool had a chance to leapfrog over United in the league tables and take over fourth place in the Barclay’s Premier League. It is a crucial place to be in, as fourth place in the BPL will go into Champion’s League qualifying next season, while fifth place heads to the less prestigious Europa League.

To add to the hurt of losing to their rivals at home and now falling 5 points behind United for fourth place in the league table, Liverpool may be down one of their starting defenders for the next few games. According to Sky Sports, Martin Skrtel has been charged by the FA for violent conduct against United’s keeper David De Gea as he appeared to stomp on the keeper’s leg as he ran after the ball.

It seems like one of those ‘accidentally, on purpose’ moments, but it’s pretty clear that Skrtel knew exactly what he was doing. This incident came when the score was 2-1 and after Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard was sent off early in the second half for stomping on United midfielder Ander Herrera.

Manchester United jumped on Liverpool early, and capitalized on a beautiful pass from Ander Herrera as Juan Mata put United up 1-0 in the 13th minute. It remained a 1-0 United lead going into halftime. In the second half, Mata would add a second on a brilliant volley from Angel Di Maria to put United up 2-0.

Daniel Sturridge would get Liverpool on the board and cut United’s lead in half, but it wasn’t enough as United left Anfield with a 2-1 win and the three points.

Liverpool are fighting for a chance at European soccer right now in the Premier League, and if Skrtel is found guilty for violent conduct, they could be without the defender for three games.
