Sam Dekker, the breakout star for Wisconsin in the NCAA Tournament, has a girlfriend from — Michigan.

Sam Dekker went from a really solid college basketball player, who intense college basket fans knew, but was very much on the periphery to the casual fan, to superstar after his personal outburst Saturday night versus the Arizona Wildcats. Of course there are levels of fandom, and levels of “casual” fandom even. But let’s assume all casual fans knew not of Dekker.

More from March Madness

After Saturday night’s incredible 27-point effort in the Badgers’ Elite Eight victory over the Arizona Wildcats everyone now has heard of Dekker.

If this were the end of the season–and there weren’t a Final Four trip coming up–Dekker might have ended up on some late night talk shows and/or morning shows, and certainly on plenty of sports radio shows. Instead, he spent his time immediately following the 85-77 win celebrating with a pretty girl from Michigan.

That pretty coed is a Michigan student, apparently from near Ann Arbor–the city where the University of Michigan campus is erected. Her name: Bailey Scheich. And that’s about all the information known about her (and really her privacy should be respected, so let’s not going seeking her out, just because we now Dekker is dating a cute girl, and that he could be playing in the NBA next season should he choose) except that she is Dekker’s girlfriend.

By all indications the couple have been together for some time, as there are many photos of the two together, and at least a few could have only been taken during a Wisconsin or Michigan summer, certainly not during a late fall or winter or even early Spring.

The two went to get burgers after the game in Los Angeles, which hopefully means In ‘N Out–the best burger joint in America, bar none. In fact, it is a pretty common hangout after high school basketball or football games or after pretty much any other event those under the age of 22 ever participate in.

It’s good that the couple apparently settled for an easy going celebration. Dekker needs to be at full strength and ready to go when his Badgers take on the undefeated Kentucky Wildcats Saturday in Indianapolis 30 minutes after the first national semifinal between Michigan State and Duke (currently slated for 8:49 PM ET).

Dekker is averaging 21.8 points per game in the NCAA Tournament overall and has begun gaining steam as a potential first-round pick in this year’s NBA draft should he leave Wisconsin before his senior year.

That would leave the Badgers without their two best players next season from the program’s first run of consecutive Final Four appearances. If he stays at Wisconsin he, like his teammate and friend Frank Kaminsky did this year, could make a run at national player of the year.

And his relationship with his girlfriend from Michigan could remain relatively uncomplicated.
