Alabama running back Bo Scarbrough suffered what is believed to be a serious knee injury on Friday during practice, according to a report by SI.com. The nature of the injury was not discussed by coach Nick Saban, but reports, including one by AL.com, are saying that it’s a torn ACL. Scarbrough suffered the injury near the end of scrimmage during Friday’s practice. Scarborough put up the following tweet after the incident.

"Everything happen for a reason! Long as I keep god out front he got my back! I’ll be back soon."

Scarbrough signed with Alabama in the 2014 recruiting class, but was unable to enroll until January of 2015 because of academic reasons. He was rated the No. 2 athlete and No. 16 player in the country by Rivals.com. At 6’2, 235 pounds, Scarbrough was expected to compete for carries while playing behind Derrick Henry.

The unfortunate timing of the injury is that it’s not long after Alabama dismissed another running back, Tyren Jones, who was arrested for marijuana possession. Yet another running back, Altee Tenpenny left Alabama in January. That seriously depletes the Crimson Tide’s running back corps. There are five remaining running backs behind Henry and Kenyan Drake, and three of those are walk-ons. The other two are true freshman DeSherrius Flowers and redshirt freshman Ronnie Clark. Clark has been rotating between defensive back and running back and will be coming off an Achilles tendon injury that he suffered last year.

If that sounds a little dire, that’s because it is. There is one bright spot though, five-star running back Damien Harris will arrive during the summer to help bolster the corps. Harris was recently in Tuscaloosa on a visit from his high school, which was on Spring Break. Harris was there with several other of Alabama’s 2015 new signees for the school’s fifth spring practice session on March 28th. The new signees were only there to observe, however, watching their future teammates go through drills in full pads. Harris signed with Alabama this last winter and was ranked the number one running back and number 31 overall player by 247Sports Composite rankings.

During the scrimmage, Scarbrough carried the ball 16 times and gained 36 yards, including two touchdowns before the injury occurred. Saban said that Bo was doing well during the scrimmage and seemed upbeat after the injury. He added that the team has had a lot of injuries, not to mention suspensions and admitted that the running back position was looking pretty thin after previously looking deep.
