Fantasy Football: The Best Draft Strategy
By Dave Fuqua
What is the best fantasy football draft strategy?
Year after year we are flooded and integrated with a new and superior fantasy football draft strategy. Some years everyone thinks it is best to draft two running backs first. Then some years everyone says to draft a top-notch Peyton Manning type of quarterback first. Other years you will hear everyone say to take two wide receivers first. Then you have the different type of leagues such as standard, dynasty, PPR (point per reception) and IDP (individual defensive players). For every type of league there are a hundred different people with over 500 different type of drafting schemes. I think sometimes the name of the game is just to try to confuse your opponent so he thinks he is drafting the RB-RB scheme and then hit him with a WR-WR scheme.

All of these different styles can lead to some pretty confused rookie fantasy footballers who read a few articles online, then load up with cheat sheets and customizable cheat sheets and $19.95 subscription services for help to conquer your league. Then you have guys who want to go out and load up on help from four or five different sites and cheat sheets laid out across two different tables so that by the time it is their turn to draft they have to make a rushed choice and wind up drafting Willis McGahee in the second round because it was the first name that came to his head.
So with all that craziness that ensues every year in mind, I suppose by now you are saying to yourself that I must have another product or a $9.99 cheat sheet or subscription that I want to sell you. Well the answer to that is no I don’t, but if it makes you feel better, I can kick you down with my PayPal email and let you send some money my way. I do have a way to draft that has been serving me very well for many years now, and it is so simple it will literally make you kick yourself in the pants for having not drafted this way all of your fantasy football career.
The great news about this revolutionary drafting method is that I am about to reveal it to you for absolutely nothing. That’s right, I am going to reveal this to you 100% free and I truly hope that it will change the way that you play fantasy football and lead you to a more fulfilling and more championship winning fantasy football season.
The method is simple and here it is: Draft the best available player to fill any open starting position that you have. Wow right? That is such a simple system, but I promise you that while it may seem like common sense, over half of the teams in your league will not draft with this premise in mind. Most teams start with the same needs unless you are in a keeper league, so if you are in a re-draft league and you are smart you can work the system just a bit and make sure that you get a top-tier position player in every round of your draft. I never understand the systems that say you have to pick a RB, WR or even a QB in a certain round. I mean, what if you are using a system that says don’t pick your QB until round 7 and there was a run on QBs back in round five that took all of the worthy starters so that you find yourself stuck with a QB2 in round seven.
No two football drafts are ever the same, and if you hamstring yourself and stick to a rigid drafting system that says I am going RB-RB-WR-WR-TE-QB then I can assure you that you will look back over your draft recap about week three and kick yourself right in the pants and wonder what in the heck you were doing passing over all the worthy QBs in round X. It is okay in my opinion to go in with somewhat of a game-plan, but you must be able to adjust and move with the flow of the draft, and if you find a first round talent laying there in the third round, you must pounce on that player instead of saying no I am a draft robot and I must pick a WR in round three.
I realize that I am asking for common sense in a world that is severely lacking in common sense, but if you are reading this article, that shows that you are a smart person and have the tools and ability to do what it takes and adjust your drafting style accordingly. That way you can switch from whatever your draft protocol has been to take advantage of bargain bin players instead of using a rigid draft protocol.
