Fantasy Baseball: Impact of the Red Sox-Yankees 19 Inning Marathon
By Mike Marteny
Six hours and 49 minutes. Think of what you can do in that time. You could run two actual marathons. You could fly from Boston to London. You could listen to Iron Butterfly’s acid rock anthem Inna-Gadda-Da-Vida twenty one times. Or you could play the longest game in Red Sox history against the hated Yankees. Last night, the 50 men on the two teams decided to do the latter.

Think about that for a minute. The Red Sox have been around for 115 years, and they have never played a longer game. This was the longest game innings-wise against the Yankees since 1978.
As you may expect, this game could have big fantasy repercussions for both last night and today, especially considering the quick turnaround. First pitch today is at 1:05pm eastern time, or about 11 hours after the end of the game. Brian McCann caught 18 of the 19 innings, or two consecutive games in a row. He will likely sit in favor of John Ryan Murphy, who pinch ran in the 18th inning after a McCann double.
Who didn’t enjoy the four hit games from Pablo Sandoval and Xander Bogaerts for their fantasy squads? Especially considering if the game had ended when it was supposed to, the latter would have been 0-4. Those owners may not enjoy it if Panda gets some rest today. Bogaerts is young enough that he should be able to handle 28 innings in hours. Besides, someone has to play, right?

Who else will sit this game? I would guess that Red Sox starting catcher Sandy Leon would sit, even though he played “only” fifteen innings. Shane Victorino may sit in favor of Daniel Nava again since Nava’s night ended a full nine innings before the actual game did.
As for the Yankees, you can probably expect Alex Rodriguez back out there since his game ended in the 11th inning. However, you could see Mark Teixeira, who played the whole game at first base, get the day off. Or at least get the day off in the field and DH instead. Jacoby Ellsbury led both teams with nine official at-bats, and considering his injury history, may be held out of today’s game.
This is all speculation. Just make sure that you check the official lineup before deploying any players from either team, especially in daily fantasy leagues. The only one we know for sure is sitting is McCann.
