Fantasy Baseball: Who Can Help With Yan Gomes Headed To The DL?

facebooktwitterreddit

It has been mostly pitchers that have hit the disabled list so far in the early season, but with the news that the Cleveland Indians placed catcher Yan Gomes on the DL with an MCL sprain, it leaves a huge void in your lineups. Gomes was off to a slow start this year, but he hit .278 with 21 homers last year, and caused the Indians to move Carlos Santana to third base to make room for him.

The club has no immediate plans to move Santana back behind the plate, and backup Roberto Perez only has 103 career plate appearances, so you may have to look elsewhere for help in standard leagues. I would recommend taking a chance on Perez in deeper leagues, but in standard leagues you can likely do better. All of these replacement options are available in 60% or less of ESPN leagues. That means that they should be available in nearly all standard leagues.

Alex Avila, Tigers: Avila was a huge disappontment last year, but he is off to a great start this year. Avila is hitting .308 with a homer, three RBI, and six runs scored so far. As long as the Tigers offense is hot, Avila could be worth throwing out there for the runs alone!

Derek Norris, Padres: Norris is hitting .320 on the young season with three multi-hit games already. He doesn’t have the power that Gomes has, but he can help you in average and RBI in an improved Padres lineup. He has three RBI and four runs scored as well. It is not like he is without power though. He hit ten homers last year in 385 at-bats with Oakland.

Carlos Ruiz, Phillies: “Chooch” is off to a good start this year. He only has one run scored and one RBI in a stagnant Phillies offense, but he is hitting .385. You can do worse in leagues of 12 or more teams. There is alwas the potential for some power. He has hit 27 home runs over the last three years.

Francisco Cervelli, Pirates: Cervelli has no power, but he has had a hit in all five games that he has played this year (6/17). He only has one run scored and one RBI, but as the Pirates offense gets the rust knocked off, he could see his counting stats pick up a little. He is a good add in deeper leagues.

Mike Zunino, Mariners: Zunino is off to yet another slow start, but his power potential keeps people coming back. The 24 year old hit 22 homers last year, and the potential is there for more this year. If you can take the hit in average, he can give you around the same power that Gomes would.
