Urban Meyer confirms J.T. Barrett won’t play on Saturday

Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer confirms that quarterback J.T. Barrett will not play in the spring game on Saturday.
Ohio State is poised to have a three-way quarterback competition for the upcoming NCAA season, but one of two of the quarterbacks involved has been limited this spring. That quarterback is J.T. Barrett and he won’t be playing in the spring game this Saturday for the Buckeyes, according to College Football Talk.

Barrett fractured his ankle in the last season finale against Michigan and he just had the screws removed in February. Not surprisingly, OSU coaches are taking the cautious approach with him.
He has been in non-contact mode during the spring, though Meyer has said that Barrett has gotten plenty of reps and more than they expected. As long as there’s no further setback between now and August, the redshirt sophomore is expected to be ready to go at 100 percent for the beginning of summer camp.
Braxton Miller is the other injured quarterback for OSU and Meyer said that his rehab from a shoulder injury has been going well. So far the injury cost him all of last season and the entirety of spring practice. Meyer says that Miller has had up to three follow-up visits with Doctor James Andrews and so far they have all gone well. Miller started throwing the football again about two months ago and looks to be on track for summer camp as well.
However, Meyer was unable to give any timetable on Miller’s return or how healthy he might be by the time summer camp rolls around. With Miller and Barrett out, the OSU quarterback competition is down to Cardale Jones and redshirt freshman Stephen Collier. The expected three-way competition between Jones, Miller and Barrett will have to wait about four months to commence.
Jones and Collier will be taking the majority of the reps during the scrimmage on Saturday and although Jones is expected to be in the three-way quarterback race, Collier has largely dropped off the radar. Obviously Jones got recognition for leading the Buckeyes to a national title, but Collier did some good work while the team was preparing for the national championship game. Unfortunately, with the other three guys ahead of him and assuming Miller and Barrett are healthy, Collier stepping up to a place on the field seems like a longshot.
For now, Meyer expects the competition to remain through the fall.
