The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are going to have quite the quarterback situation to sort out.

Spring games tend to mean very little in terms of individual statistics and performances. However, when something like a quarterback throwing a perfect 60 yard pass for a touchdown happens, coaches and fans tend to take notice.

Notre Dame junior Malik Zaire did exatly that during the Fighting Irish’s spring game on Saturday, showing off his absolute cannon for an arm, via NBC Sports Network.

Again, always take spring games with a grain of salt, but Zaire appears to have accuracy down the field and certainly has plus arm strength.

The junior showed off some of those skills in Notre Dame’s upset of LSU in the Music City Bowl. Zaire completed 12 of 15 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown, but was a bigger factor on the ground with 22 carries for 96 yards and a score.

That performance has led many to believe Zaire will start full time for the Fighting Irish next season. Zaire will be battling senior Everett Golston, who has put up big numbers in the past but tends to be far too turnover prone.

Golston’s struggles in the second half of last season led head coach Brian Kelly to split snaps between the two quarterbacks in Notre Dame’s final two games of the year. Situations like that typically don’t work out too well, so expect Kelly to name a starter before the season.

With physical skills like those shown above, Kelly may have no choice but to roll with Zaire.
