Fantasy Baseball: Greg Holland To DL, Who Should You Target?

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kansas City Royals placed closer Greg Holland on the disabled list with a grade 1 pectoral strain over the weekend. He is the first closer to get hurt, and this leaves some of you scrambling for saves. There are some that were prepared and drafted a couple of extra closers, but for those of us that did not, here is a list of guys that can help while Holland is out.

For those of you in head-to-head leagues, this is not that big of a deal. However, for those of us in roto leagues, this could be a big blow. A grade 1 is the most minor of strains, but Holland will likely still be out for a month. Considering Holland had four saves and had not even allowed a hit so far in four appearances, he is going to be impossible to replace without trading someone away. For those of you that missed out on Wade Davis and are headed for the wire, here are some options.

All of these players are available in 60% or less of ESPN leagues:

  • Joel Peralta, Dodgers: Peralta has emerged as the best option in the Dodgers bullpen while Kenley Jansen is out. He is three for three in save chances, and has not allowed a run in six appearances so far. Chris Hatcher has struggled in the role, so most of the save opportunities should go to Peralta until Jansen comes back. That is supposed to be sometime in the middle to end of May. By that time, Holland could be back.

Miguel Castro, Blue Jays: The closer situation in Toronto is just that: a situation. No reliable option has emerged since the team let Casey Janssen go. Brett Cecil blew his first (and only) opportunity, and has struggled to a 6.23 ERA to start the year. Enter Castro, who has the Jays’ only two saves of the season. They both happened within a three game span, and he has blown one opportunity and taken a loss since those saves. For now he is the closer, so he can help you in the few opportunities that the Blue Jays get. If he falters again, Roberto Osuna would seem to be the next in line. He has nine strikeouts in eight innings and has not allowed a run.

Yoervis Medina, Mariners: Fernando Rodney has been a disaster (1-1, 12.46 ERA, 2.54 WHIP, 3/4 saves), and Medina picked up a save in the game that Rodney won on April 12th. There is no changing of the guard in Seattle, and Rodney likely has a long leash due to his contract, but Medina could be called on again if Rodney doesn’t get it together soon.

Rafael Betancourt, Rockies: Betancourt converted his only save opportunity so far, but with the failure of LaTroy Hawkins, it is open season in the Rockies bullpen. Right now the wheel has landed on Adam Ottavino, and this is likely due to the fact that he was dominant in a setup role. It has carried over to him closing as he has converted both save opportunities, but Ottavino has no prior closing experience. If he falters, Betancourt could get another look.
