Although Vikings general manager Rick Spielman announced today he doesn’t want to trade Adrian Peterson, the 2012 MVP likely will stay in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Vikings have dug in their heels and want to end the drama over their star rusher. For months the team has said it wants Adrian Peterson back.

This afternoon Vikings general manager Rick Spielman announced he has no desire in trading Peterson, according to the Associated Press.

But the feeling is not mutual. Peterson, who was reinstated by the NFL earlier this month, said he wants a fresh start. Can you blame him?

The standout RB feels “uneasy” about re-joining the Vikings after they worked with the NFL to stick him on the exempt list. The stains of shattered trust are still apparent in the relationship, as NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport pointed out in late February.

Then there’s the issue of winning a Super Bowl. For the 30-year-old, the clock is ticking. Running backs–especially those who seek out as many hits as the 2012 MVP–seem to precipitate their own expiration date. And in an effort of not retiring empty-handed like Barry Sanders (a oft-made equivalent), the search for a new, more promising squad becomes even more crucial.

As a Vikings fan, I will grimace the day he leaves. But the man deserves a Super Bowl ring, and lord knows Minnesota is not the place he’ll find it–at least anytime soon. Beneath Spielman’s words there’s plenty of subtext, and in all likelihood it’s only a matter of time before Peterson settles in a new home.
