The Cleveland Browns select Cameron Erving with the 19th overall pick.

With the 19th-overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Cleveland Browns select Cameron Erving, Guard out of Florida State.

After a dreadful 2014 draft (see: Johnny Manziel), the Browns seemed to bounce back well 2015, addressing two of their key needs.

Grade: B+

Going into the draft, two of the Browns biggest needs were defensive line and right guard. Cameron Erving has the potential to fill this right guard void with an immense amount of talent. Erving has size, athleticism, and length. His tremendous athletic ability is what makes him so effective at the line. As a converted defensive tackle, Erving will continue to improve in the NFL with more experience. Erving, a first-team All-ACC and All-American offensive tackle in 2013, started all 55 career games at Florida State.

While this pick did fill a main need, it could be a bit of a reach. Hence, the B+ rating. It is possible the Browns reached to grab Erving in case Alex Mack, the team’s current center, leaves before the season starts.

Erving was projected to be drafted towards the end of the first round or beginning of the second. The Patriots were one team that mocks thought would be able to snag Erving at 32nd overall.

Additionally, Danny Shelton, the Browns first first-round pick at number 12 overall, will be an instant fix to a severely-lacking defensive line.

Overall, Erving will be a solid addition to this Browns team. With some NFL-level experience, he should be able to best-utilize his size and speed. Between Erving and Shelton, Cleveland should have two solid rookies this year, which would be a nice change of pace.

It seems as though the Browns will be improved this year. Or, at least, they will not regress. Now, if they can just get that quarterback situation figured out.
