La’el Collins signs with the Dallas Cowboys
Former LSU offensive lineman La’el Collins signs with the Dallas Cowboys.
La’el Collins has found himself a home not too far from his old one.
Collins, the undrafted rookie free agent, has been signed by the Dallas Cowboys, according to a source. Collins, who was once considered a top pro prospect, could potentially start at offensive line in Dallas.
Collins went undrafted in the 2015 NFL Draft after he was questioned by the Baton Rouge police following the murder of his ex-girlfriend and her unborn son. The lineman went from a concensus first-round pick to falling out of the draft entirely. Though it was confirmed by authorities that Collins was never a suspect, no one in the investigation will be cleared until an arrest is made. To this point, there is no timeline for the duration of the investigation.

It was speculated that no team would sign Collins until he was officially cleared in the case, and he even petitioned the league to remove him from the draft when it appeared his stock was sliding. However, it looks like the Cowboys are willing to take a risk. This, in itself is not surprising. The Cowboys have a tendency to take a risk on talented players – like the team’s 2015 second round pick Randy Gregory. Gregory and Collins are both incredible talents. Assuming the two players don’t run into any more issues, the Cowboys will come out of the 2015 off season looking like geniuses.
Collins was impressive at the NFL Combine, putting up a 5.12 40-yard, 3.04 20-yard, and a 1.87 10-yard. He also benched 225 lbs 21 times, had a 27 inch vertical jump, a 9 foot broad jump, and ran the three-cone drill in 7.70 seconds.
Interestingly enough, it seems as though the Cowboys were not the only organization interested in the LSU Tiger. On Tuesday, a group of Dolphins players charted a private jet and flew to Baton Rouge to meet with La’el Collins. The group, which included Mike Pouncey, Kelvin Sheppard and Anthony Johnson, visited Collins in an attempt to convince him to join the Dolphins.
The next season is sure to be an interesting one for the Cowboys. How great would it be to have HBO’s “Hard Knocks” at their training camp this year? Is it too late to make that happen? The collection of characters coming into camp will certainly bring entertainment value.
As a former Cowboy would say, get your popcorn ready.
