Ajax players escorted onto pitch by moms for Mother’s Day (Video)

AFC Ajax honored mothers in one of the coolest ways possible.

AFC Ajax, like hundreds of other soccer clubs around the world, traditionally has their players walk onto the pitch escorted by young kids. In honor of Mother’s Day, the Dutch club had something much more special and substantially cooler in mind.

Rather than having a bunch of youngsters by the players’ sides on Sunday, it was their mothers that flanked them as they took the pitch:

This is an exceptionally cool moment all around. The mothers get to spend the day with their sons when they otherwise would have been apart from them, even if they were present in the stadium. Likewise, the sons get to be with their mothers. More than anything, though, it gives the players the opportunity to honor their mothers and give them the recognition that all mothers deserve.

There’s only one real negative aspect of the gesture; it definitely makes flowers and a card seem a bit lackluster for those of us who aren’t suiting up for Ajax.
