It came as a surprise to everyone last week that Everett Golson would be transferring from Notre Dame after spending three years with the team — two of them were eligible. It has to be tough for the Fighting Irish to lose a guy who could potentially lead this team as a senior in 2015, but they have a young gun, Malik Zaire, to take care of them now.
Golson led the Fighting Irish to the national title game as a freshman in 2012 before being deemed ineligible in 2013.
However, he fought back in the 2014 season to lead the Irish to a strong start and he showcased his skill as a possible Heisman candidate before declining near the end of the season as fans were calling for Zaire to start.
While people might be surprised at Golson’s transfer, they have to realize that he had a good reason to do so. Notre Dame fans were already giving up on him before his senior season even started and hoping for the younger Zaire to take over as the highly-touted QB that he is.
A couple of schools have been named as likely destinations for the senior and those are Georgia and South Carolina. Georgia is there because it’s close to home and South Carolina is there because it’s extremely close to his home — he is from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Coming off a season in which he threw 29 touchdown passes, both of these teams, which otherwise would have to rely on a first-year starter, are hoping to land the former Irish QB.
Notre Dame is blocking a handful of schools for Golson that are on their schedule for 2015. What this means is that they are allowed to deny a release to certain schools that they name and he must honor that.
Texas was mentioned as a possible top choice for Golson, although he has yet to reveal a list of schools that he would like to transfer to.
Basically, if you’re on Notre Dame’s schedule for the 2015 season, you are blocked from trying to land the talented QB.
That’s a pretty good, but unsurprising, strategy by the Irish.
