Stephen Jones: Dez Bryant’s contract goal is for long term
Many pundits may view the Dallas Cowboys and Dez Bryant’s inability to reach a contract as an internal issue, but in reality it is just a byproduct of a talented free agent class at wide receiver.
Dez Bryant and the Dallas Cowboys have yet to reach a contract agreement, but it is no fault of either party.
Bryant just so happens to be looking for a new, big contract at the same time as three other premier wide receivers in their prime. A.J. Green of the Cincinnati Bengals, Julio Jones of the Atlanta Falcons and Demaryius Thomas of the Denver Broncos are all fellow top-tier receivers in search of their first longterm mega-contract in the NFL. Thomas and Bryant are locked up on franchise tags, while Green and Jones are finishing out their rookie deals.
All four will without a doubt receive a major payday in the near future, but how soon that will be is unsure. What is certain, however, is that whoever signs the first contract will have a domino effect on the other three.
The Cowboys’ executive vice president, Stephen Jones, assured season-ticket holders during a conference call last week that the lack of a contract extension for Bryant has nothing to do with his relationship with the organization. He attributes it to simply poor timing for him to be hitting the free agent market.
"“No one has been able to really figure out what they think the market should be,” Jones said, via the The Dallas Morning News. “I think ultimately we’ll get this done. No one wants to have Dez long term involved with the Dallas Cowboys more so than our organization, Jerry and myself. Our goal is to get it done, get it done long term, so we can move forward and let Dez continue to make all the great plays he’s made up until this point.”"
When it is all said and done, Dez Bryant is going to remain a Dallas Cowboy for a long time. Tony Romo needs an elite receiving target to throw to during the final years of his career, and I just cannot see Dallas letting Bryant walk.
Also, the Cowboys organization has stood behind Bryant through several controversies, and he assured the recently signed La’el Collins, who has spent the past week dealing with unthinkable circumstances, that owner Jerry Jones and the organization will have his back.
The fact that Bryant feels so strongly about his support system in Dallas is a positive sign for Cowboys fans, and do not expect the lack of a contract extension to drive a wedge between him and the team.
