Everett Golson pushed back his transfer announcement on Monday afternoon

Folks waiting on transfer news from former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson will have sit tight a little longer. According to ESPN’s Brett McMurphy, Golson has decided to postpone his announcement, which was expected to come down the pike on Monday afternoon. Moreover, McMurphy says that the quarterback may still be in the process of visiting programs.

Last week Golson made the rounds in ACC/SEC territory, visiting with coaches from Florida, Florida State and Georgia to find potential new suitor. At the time of his visit to Gainesville, Florida only had two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster; however the Gators signed two QB transfers after the meeting and then appeared out of the running. Georgia has a loaded stable of quarterbacks competing to take over for departed Hutson Mason, and Mark Richt has maintained that all competition is welcome (see: not guaranteeing the job to any player, in-house or transfer).

That left Florida State as the perceived frontrunner. FSU has a bevy of talented playmakers in the backfield and at wide receiver, but is searching to replace the departed Jameis Winston. Currently, redshirt junior Sean Maguire is slated to take the role, and though he played well during the Clemson game, Golson would be an upgrade. In two seasons with the Fighting Irish Golson threw for nearly 5,900 yards and roughly had a 2/1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. Ironically, his first ever regular season loss came against Florida State in last season’s controversial game at Doak Campbell Stadium.

FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher has publicly expressed that while he was happy meeting with Golson he too will not guarantee any player a starting position.

"“I’m not making a decision, [he is],” Fisher said. “Then we’ll talk and go through it. He’s a great young man and I really enjoyed meeting him.…“We never tell a guy he’ll be the starter. It’s a competition no matter what. Let him earn his way through it.”"

With one year of remaining eligibility, Golson assuredly wants to play on a team where he can both start and potentially take a run at a championship (conference and/or national title). Could Fisher’s refusal to hand over the reins without a competition be what caused Golson to drag his feet?

Whatever the case, with Golson expanding his search, expect Alabama, LSU and South Carolina to gain traction in the rumor mill. The former two programs believe they’re one sharp signal caller away from a  trip to the College Football Playoff, while the latter is Golson’s home state school and helmed by quarterback friendly Steve Spurrier.
