Just days after Everett Golson picked Florida State over a handful of other rumored destinations, the newest college football national title odds have been released and the Seminoles are close to the top of the rankings.
The former Notre Dame quarterback decided to leave the school just a couple of weeks ago, leaving the starting job to Malik Zaire — a highly-touted quarterback that Fighting Irish fans have been excited about since he stepped foot on campus.
While Golson fell off a bit at the end of last season for Notre Dame, he did find himself on the Heisman-watch list through the first eight games, even leading the pack for the couple of weeks with his impressive stats and improved throwing motion and confidence.
Now that he is joining the Seminoles who had won the national title in 2013 and had the Heisman winner, Jameis Winston, in the same year, Golson has some very big shoes to fill. However, he is likely a better option than Sean Maguire who backed up Winston for the past two years and started just one game during his career.
Here are the updated college football national title odds as of May 20:
There are a few surprises that jump out on the list of top contenders for the 2015-16 national title, according to Vegas.
The first one that pops out to me is Michigan with 40/1 odds despite not even making a bowl game last season. The Wolverines head into 2015 with a new head coach in Jim Harbaugh and no anointed starting quarterback. It seems as if the Harbaugh hype machine is out of control right now.
Notre Dame, despite losing Golson and leaning on an inexperienced starter, is one of the top teams as well with 20/1 odds. It’s a bit surprising seeing as the Fighting Irish lost five games last season and are relatively young and inexperienced on offense.
The last two teams that surprise me a bit on this list are Arkansas, a team that’s relatively rising, and Florida, a team that has been mediocre for years.
Florida State has a solid shot to win the national title in 2015-16 with a dynamite incoming recruiting class and solid young wide outs and Dalvin Cook in the backfield.
Golson made a good choice.
