After dominating Charlotte for two weeks, including wins at the All-Star Race and Coca-Cola 600, they have four guys in the top-12 after qualifying for Sunday’s FedEx 400.
Denny Hamlin, who won the All-Star Race and finished top-10 at Charlotte, will be on the pole once the FedEx 400 at Dover begins. He was fast enough to edge out Martin Truex Jr., who finished second in qualifying and will line up on the outside. Kyle Busch, who looked great in his return at Charlotte, will start 10th.
For others who have won Dover, it wasn’t a great day of qualifying.
Jimmie Johnson, a nine-time winner at Dover who owns the track better than any other driver has before, finished a disappointing 14th in qualifying. However, with 400 laps and a better knowledge of the track than anyone else, expect him to work out the issues with his car and be a factor to win.
Brad Keselowski, another race favorite, will be starting 19th when the race begins. It wasn’t his best day of qualifying, but he’s faced longer odds in his career.
Kevin Harvick, who has been the most dominant driver this season, will start in the second row on the outside at fourth.
The story of Dover thus far is much like that of Charlotte, which is that Joe Gibbs Racing and Denny Hamlin are dominating.
Even better for Hamlin, he will have his teammates Busch, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards not far behind.
