Fantasy Baseball: Rangers Call Up Joey Gallo To Start Tuesday
By Mike Marteny
The Texas Rangers have placed veteran third baseman Adrian Beltre on the disabled list with a sprained left thumb. Despite the fact that Beltre is not expected to be out much longer than 15 days, the Rangers will call up top prospect Joey Gallo to replace him.

Gallo became a household name during the Futures Game at Target Field over the All Star break last year. Gallo was hitting .321 with nine homers and 31 RBI in just 34 games for AA Frisco at the time of his promotion.
As of now, the team does not plan to keep Gallo with the major league club once Beltre returns, but we all know that plans can change. We have to think that Gallo will have every chance to prove that he can stick around. That makes him worth a speculative add in all leagues, even standard leagues.
As any of us that have paid attention to prospects know, the power is for real. Gallo has back-to-back 40 home run seasons in the minors at ages 19 and 20. He already has 113 home runs in the minors.

That Balls Outta Here
While it is unrealistic to believe that Gallo can hit 30 home runs over the rest of this season should he play well enough to stay in the majors, 20 is a real possibility. He is likely not available in any form of keeper leagues, but I was able to pluck him in a couple of more shallow leagues. Those of you feeling the sting of the injuries to Anthony Rendon, Jake Lamb, David Wright, or now Adrian Beltre, could have a more long-term replacement at the hot corner.
Gallo is a career .268 hitter in the minors, so there is concern that he will have some trouble with major league pitching. Then again, he is just 21, so it is much too early to speculate on that. The truth is, we really don’t know what to expect, but if the Futures Game was any indication, Gallo will be fine.
If he is available and you need some corner infield help, he is worth adding to see how he performs over the next two weeks. You might just wind up with the kind of player that can help you win your league!
