When the Baylor Bears open up the 2016 college football season, they might not be doing it in the heat of Waco, Texas. No, as a matter of fact, there’s a chance that they might not even be in the United States of America altogether to open up the campaign. Baylor could start things off next season in the Land Down Under.
Yes, according to a report from Baylor’s Rivals site, Sic’EmSports.com, the program is nearing finalization to open up the 2016 season in Australia. And not only could the open up the year in a different country, a Pac-12 team could end up being their opponent, with the California Golden Bears being the most likely candidate at the moment.
In recent years teams from college football have opened up their season’s outside of the United States, playing their opening game in Ireland. Last year it was the Penn State Nittany Lions defeating the Central Florida Knights in a thrilling opener that went down to the wire.
So, Australia would be an entirely new venture completely for college football, and as of right now, Sydney and Melbourne are the two cities that are front runners to host the potential match up.
This game would also serve the purpose of getting Baylor’s out-of-conference schedule strengthened up a bit by them going against a Pac-12 opponent. A knock on the Bears in recent years is the fact that their out-of-conference scheduling has been lackluster compared to others, so not only would they get a nice trip out of the country, they could potentially help a national championship cause down the line if the opportunity presents itself.
But there is still a ways to go before this deal could get finalized completely, and right now the focus of Art Briles and his Baylor team is on the 2015 opener against SMU on Sept. 4 in Dallas.
