We are just over a month away from the MLB Trade Deadline, and already the hot stove is heating up in regards to Cole Hamels. The Phillies starter was on the block last year an has been the subject of trade fodder since the deadline passed last summer.
Despite rumors that teams like the Pirates, Cubs, Red Sox and Tigers were interested in Hamels at one point or another, he remained in Philadelphia and has yet to be moved. That could all be changing though, as the Texas Rangers have entered the equation in a big way.
According to Jon Morosi from FOXSports, the Rangers and Phillies are engaged in trade discussion that would send Hamels to Texas after he waives his no-trade clause.
One of the big hangups in the Phillies trading Hamels has been his no-trade clause, as that’s been a source of frustration for teams willing to take on his contract but who Hamels is unwilling to play for. That could change though with the Rangers, as Hamels seems interested in waiving that no-trade clause to make things happen this time around.
Adding Hamels to the rotation would give Texas a boost they need to stay in the AL postseason chase, as the AL West is still insanely winnable. There’s little room for error in the summer months, as that’s when the marathon turns into a sprint and teams begin to rise and fall.
Texas can be one of the risers if they acquire Hamels and these trade discussions are something to keep an eye on.
