DraftKings, and daily fantasy sports in general, has grown in popularity over the last couple of years. We’ve seen the commercials and even the season-long fantasy sites have succumbed to the hype of DFS. I have dabbled in daily fantasy once or twice before, but my curiosity has grown immensely.

Now that that’s taken care of, here is my lineup suggestion for DraftKings’ 4 PM slate of games. There are eight games to choose from, and there are a lot of star players to build your roster around. DraftKing’s roster construction is 2 P, C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS and 3 OF spots on a budget of $50,000. The building block player is a player that costs a lot, but is just that. He is the player that your build the rest of your team around.

Building Block

Clayton Kershaw, P, $12,300 @MIA

The player I would build around during this slate of games is Kershaw. The Miami Marlins have hit for some power this month, 25 home runs, but mostly from the bat of Giancarlo Stanton. With recent news of Stanton’s injury, there is no question about using Kershaw. The Marlins are ninth in team strikeouts in June, 187 with a .247 batting average. I am more than comfortable to shell out close to 25 percent of my salary for one of the game’s best pitcher.

Michael Lorenzen, P, $4,500 @NYM

Surprisingly, Lorenzen has a better matchup than Kershaw. The New York Mets has struck out 199 times this month, sixth in the league. The team is either power or bust. Curtis Granderson has six home runs, eight RBI and 29 strikeouts. Lorenzen isn’t that much of a strikeout pitcher, 5.7 K/9, but pitching against the Mets can help raise that. For the price, Lorenzen is a good No. 2 option in DraftKings.

Yasmany Grandal, C, $3,500 @MIA

Grandal missed six games at the end of May. Since his return, he has six home runs, nine RBI and a 18:12 K:BB rate. Despite an 0-for-8 slump over his last three games, the matchup is perfect for him to break out of it. The Marlins are sending out Tom Koehler this game. He has a 3.76 ERA and 1.30 WHIP in 13 starts this season. The Los Angeles Dodgers are ninth in runs scored in June. Something has to give and I think Grandal hits a two-run home run.

Todd Frazier, 1B, $4,600 @NYM

While I could have used Frazier at third base, I didn’t like the prices of the top two first basemen. Frazier will be facing Matt Harvey in this game, who has a 3.38 ERA in four starts this month. Frazier and the Cincinnati Reds have been a powerhouse this month and Frazier has a lot to do with that. He has two home runs in his last five games. He is in the middle of a superstar season and this matchup will continue the hot streak.

Joe Panik, 2B, $3,600 vs. COL

There is no way you can pass up on Panik at this price. He has back-to-back three-hit games with two runs, two RBI, two walks and a stolen base. He will be facing Chris Rusin, who owns a 5.03 ERA and 1.56 WHIP. In the very shallow second base position, Panik is the best-priced DraftKings player.

Justin Turner, 3B, $3,900 @MIA

Yes. Turner is the third Dodgers player I picked, and not just because of the matchup. I wrote about Turner being a nice pickup in year-long leagues. That opinion doesn’t change for daily leagues. He can hit for power and contact in a dangerous Dodgers’ lineup. He hit a triple and three-run home run in his last three games. While Nolan Arenado is probably the best third baseman available, Turner is not too far behind for $900 less.

Troy Tulowitzki, SS, $4,700 @SF

More from Fantasy Baseball

There was no question on who I was going to pick at shortstop. Tim Lincecum isn’t the pitcher he was just a couple of years ago, 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP. Even as the most expensive shortstop, Tulowitzki is worth the price. He has eight hits, one home run and six RBI in his last five games. His home-road splits aren’t too far apart, which makes for a nice matchup for Tulo.

Andrew McCutchen, OF, $4,500 vs. ATL

After an early season scare, McCutchen looks to be back on track as a superstar. Six hits (three doubles and one home run), two RBI, four walks and a stolen base. The Atlanta Braves‘ Julio Teheran has been hit-or-miss this season. He had a 28 game score his last outing, but a -0.2 in the game before. He allowed four runs over 7.1 innings the last time he faced McCutchen and the Pittsburgh Pirates. McCutchen is set at a modest price in a good matchup.

J.D. Martinez, OF, $5,200 vs. CWS

I was shocked at how expensive Martinez was. Yet, when I looked at his previous game stats, I understand why. He has hit a home run in three straight games with five RBI and four runs scored. The Detroit Tigers have scored five or more runs in five of their last six games. They won 7-1 the last time they faced John Danks. If you can spare the extra salary, Martinez against Danks is a matchup you exploit.

Chris Young, OF, $3,300 @HOU

With just $3,300 left, I had slim pickings. Young has been great for the New York Yankees over the last four games, four straight multi-hit games with one double, one home run and five RBI. He even busted out the jets and recorded a stolen base. With the Yankees’ lineup healthy and hitting, this could be another good game for Young.
