NOTE: these picks are based solely on statistics. Some players have never faced their opponents, or have very little experience against them. I am not saying that none of those are good picks. This is based on statistical analysis only. If you have a gut feeling, then by all means, follow that. This is not an exact science.
Here are my FanDuel hitter picks for July 7:
First Base:
Best Bet:
David Ortiz, Red Sox ($3,200): With all due respect to Paul Goldschmidt and his 5 for 9 with three walks off of Yovani Gallardo, I am still taking Ortiz. Goldy has not taken Gallardo deep. Ortiz has gone yard off of Dan Haren three times. Papi is 8 for 23 with two walks, a triple(!!), three homers, and six RBI off of Haren. He should give you the most bang for your buck.
Honorable Mention:
Ike Davis, Athletics ($2,200): We here at FantasyCPR like Ike today. He faced Nate Eovaldi 13 times when they were both in the NL East and came away with five hits and three walks. He has two doubles, two homers, and an impressive eight RBI off of Eovaldi. Given that short porch in right, Ike is a great bet to go deep off of Eovaldi again.
Second Base:
Best Bet:
Howie Kendrick, Dodgers ($3,000): Kendrick leads the way in a shallow pool at second base if you are looking at past histories. Kenrick’s 4 for 11 (all singles) and an RBI give him the best stats of the night.
Honorable Mention:
Jose Altuve, Astros ($4,700): Altuve is 3 for 10 with a double off of the reigning AL Cy Young winner in Corey Kluber. Given Altuve’s ability to hit almost anyone, if you have the spare cash, he might be worth taking tonight.
Stay Away:
I usually don’t do this, but this one is worth taking note of. Dustin Pedroia is 0 for 16 with a walk off of Dan Haren in his career. I would gamble somewhere else.
Shortstop:
Best Bet:
Jimmy Rollins, Dodgers ($2,400): Rollins is 7 for 22 (.318) with three doubles, a triple, and two RBI off of former Dodger and current Phillie Chad Billingsley. There isn’t a lot of past history at shortstop to be crazy about tonight either going off of past numbers, so the veteran Rollins looks like a nice play.
Honorable Mention:
Asdrubal Cabrera, Rays ($2,700): Cabrera is 3 for 8 with a walk, a homer, and three RBI in his career off of Edinson Volquez. The only question is whether he will play both the day and night games of the doubleheader.
Stay Away:
There is another with a long history of bad performances today. Ian Desmond is just 3 for 19 with 9 strikeouts against Johnny Cueto in his career. He has not driven in a run either. That makes him a really risky proposition.
Third Base:
Best Bet:
Kris Bryant, Cubs ($3,500): Bryant has only faced Tyler Lyons three times, but he came away with an RBI single. That is about as good as you will get with past history at third base tonight.
Honorable Mention:
Josh Donaldson, Blue Jays ($4,100): Donaldson is 2 for 6 off of Jose Quintana. I am picking right handed power against left handed pitching tonight. This is as good of a gamble as you are going to get with David Wright still out. He was the only one with a proven track record at the hot corner against his opponent.
Next: How About The OF?

Catcher:
Best Bet:
Buster Posey, Giants ($4,600): Posey is 3 for 7 with a double and two RBI off of Bartolo Colon. Colon may be an ageless wonder, but Posey doesn’t seem to have much of a problem with him.
Honorable Mention:
Wilson Ramos, Nationals ($3,000): Ramos is one of the few that has had any kind of success off of Reds ace Johnny Cueto. Ramos is 3 for 6 off of him, but doesn’t have any counting stats. Gambling with a guy facing a pitcher like Cueto is always a risk, but it could pay off if you can’t afford Posey.
Outfield:
Best Bets:
Andrew McCutchen, Pirates ($4,500): McCutchen is only 2 for 7 with a walk off of Tyson Ross, but he does have a two run homer off of him. That is a better reward that three singles, right?
Brett Gardner, Yankees ($4,200): Gardner is 3 for 6 with a walk and two RBI off of Sonny Gray. We all know how disruptive Gardner can be when he is on base, and he is on base a lot against Gray. Gardner is a good play tonight.
Shane Victorino, Red Sox ($2,400): Victorino hasn’t faced Dan Haren much, but he has done well off of him. Victorino is 3 for 5 with a walk, a double, a homer, and two RBI off of Haren. So long as he is in the lineup, he could get you a lot for a little money.
Honorable Mention:
Melvin Upton, Jr., Padres ($2,200): The Upton formerly known as B.J. has hit very well against Francisco Liriano. He is 8 for 22 with two walks, three doubles, and two RBI off of Liriano. He is about the only current Padre that has had any kind of success off of Liriano.
Gregory Polanco, Pirates ($2,200): Polanco is 3 for 6 with a double, a homer, and two RBI off of Tyson Ross. That line should earn him a start tonight.
Angel Pagan, Giants ($2,200): Pagan is 4 for 9 with a double and two RBI off of Bartolo Colon. With all of the injuries in the Giants lineup, they need Pagan to come through. He has done pretty well so far.
